5 logic puzzles to test your reasoning
Try these five short challenges before taking the full QI1 test. They cover deduction, number sequences, pattern recognition and verbal reasoning. Take your time, choose an answer, then open the explanation.
1. The three boxes
Three boxes are labelled Apples, Pears and Mixed. Every label is wrong. You may take one fruit from one box. Which box should you sample first to determine all three correct labels?

Start with the box labelled Mixed. Because every label is wrong, that box cannot be mixed. The single fruit you draw tells you whether it contains only apples or only pears. From there, the remaining two incorrect labels force the other assignments.
2. Number sequence
What comes next: 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, ?

42. The differences are +4, +6, +8 and +10. The next difference is +12, so 30 + 12 = 42. Another way to see it is n(n+1): 1×2, 2×3, 3×4, and so on.
3. Deduction challenge
No A is B. Every C is A. What must be true?

No C is B. If every C belongs to A, and A and B never overlap, then C cannot overlap B either. This tests whether a conclusion follows necessarily rather than merely seeming plausible.
4. Letter pattern
Which letter comes next: A, C, F, J, O, ?

5. Verbal analogy
